Creating a collective of creators
Panel One .
Panel One is a collective of comic creators.
Panel One creators are from all disciplines and all career stages. We are working together to put a spotlight on local, original work. When we first started Panel One, local meant Calgary. At first, we thought we’d likely have some folks from Southern Alberta and Edmonton interested in joining Panel One, however, we have grown to the point where local now means Canadian. Our members are in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Since Panel One focuses on Canadian creators, we even have some members who are living and creating abroad in Ireland, Scotland and Singapore.
Panel One isn’t exclusively about indie comics – though the majority of us are working on creator-owned and independently publishing work. There is some serious love for indie work! However, we also have members who are working for IDW, Marvel and other industry publishers.
The mission of Panel One is very simple: to work together to celebrate and promote the work being done by members, to turn heads towards the dedicated and talented people working in comics in Canada and to help one another succeed.
Becoming a Society
In 2017, the team that started the festival incorporated to become the Panel One Comics Society (P1CS). This society is a non-profit group working to operate the show. Our board is filled with talented people who have experience and expertise in the different elements of running a festival. Many of the board members are creators themselves, however, we also have several people who are creative in other ways and come to support creators! We are a well-balanced team who work hard to deliver you a great festival experience.
